The Adriatic Riviera
The rivieras of Montenegro offer some of the finest beaches to be found anywhere in the Adriatic. From Herceg-Novi in the north to Ulcinj in the south, the coast offers a beautiful variety of locations, with over 117 different beaches (73 km of sand) along its 290 kilometers of sunny coast. Montenegro's coast has everything from secret rocky coves only accessible by boat, to a 13 kilometer stretch of wide sandy beach like the one found near Ulcinj. Bounded by the clean, crystal clear water of the Adriatic and a backdrop of dark mountains, fields, olive groves or heavily scented pine forests - the rivieras are the ideal place to rejuvenate or invigorate in equal measure. The mild mediterranean climate has blessed this region with ancient olive, fig, orange and lemon groves - not to mention vines and kiwi fruit. The entire coast is a natural health spa with the center at Igalo being particularly respected. The dark blue sea, the white rocks, and the eternal green, aromatic vegetation certainly aid in any recouperation.
Montenegro is known locally as Crna Gora or Black Mountain - the fairy tale country with the fairy tale name, a mysterious place that had slipped beyond memory is once again flickering back into vibrant life. It is little wonder that many famous European botanists and geographers, while visiting Montenegro, disregarded their exploratory missions and became passionate travel writers. Montenegro is one of the few undiscovered and undisturbed natural gems of Europe. It is Europe in microcosm, the best that continent has to offer in one tiny place gift wrapped by the Adriatic and Sky. With Scandinavian Fjords, Spanish Beaches and Swiss Alpine pastures and peaks, a traveller can be skiing in the morning and sunbathing by the sea in the afternoon.
There are few places in the world where the eternal struggle of the Elements has shaped the earth with such passion and beauty. The fabulously jagged coastline of the Adriatic sea offers a variety of beaches, coves, bays and islets that you have been dreaming of. The reality is even more exotic than the promises found in tourist brochures. The world's southernmost and probably the most celebrated fjord, beautiful Mediterranean Kotor Bay, as well as the whole seacoast, is sheltered and shielded by the karstic mountains: Rumija, Sutomoran, Orjen, and Lovcen. In these picturesque karstic areas and in the cultivated Zeta and Bjelopavlici valleys, you will imbibe the essence of Montenegrin mountains. The high mountains like Durmitor, Bjelasica and Komovi can present an unforgettable experience with their hidden lakes, numerous pastures, forests, pointed peaks, diverse flora and fauna, fast mountain rivers and imposing canyons.
There are three primary signature colors present in the Montenegrin landscape: blue, emerald green and iron gray, intricately combined and interwoven - a natural compliment to one another. As a consequence of its immense natural beauty, Montenegro was proclaimed an ecological state through a special declaration. The National Parks of Montenegro are Durmitor, Biogradska Gora, Mount Lovcen, Lake Skadar and Kotor City.
